April 2010 – WHAT’S ON
What to See and What to Do
This time of year is an excellent opportunity to explore Hong Kong’s unique culture. In May the city celebrates four traditional Chinese festivals. The first of these is the Birthday of Tin Hau (6 May), patron saint of fishermen, whose followers travel to Sai Kung (Joss House Bay) and Yuen Long (Tai Shu Ha). One of the highlights of these proceedings is the flotilla of brightly decorated fishing boats that travel to Joss House Bay. Then from 18 – 22 May there’s the incredible Cheung Chau Bun Festival with its Piu Sik (Parade of Colours) Parade where children, dressed up as mythological Chinese characters, are suspended in the air appearing to float above the crowd. At midnight on 21 May there’s the Bun Tower Scrambling Competition where athletes race up a 60-metre-high tower covered in ‘lucky’ buns to see who can collect the most. Running concurrently on 21 May are the birthdays of Tam Kung (another fishing deity) and the Birthday of the Lord Buddha. One of the most interesting places to witness the latter is at the Giant Buddha located near the Po Lin Monastery. Why not join a tour to enjoy the excitement of these four traditional Chinese festivals?
